Kusökalv is the main island in an archipelago northeast of Axmar bruk. Regardless of which of the three ports you call at, you are surrounded by a magical atmosphere.
Cow calf is part of the Axmar nature reserve. It is the southern Bothnian coast's largest contiguous, relatively unexploited archipelago area. Kusökalv has been known since 1539 and is located northeast of Kusön.
The island's magical atmosphere does not only come from the beautiful nature. , but it is something more. Among the cobblestones and primeval forest vegetation are the traces of centuries of temporary visitors: fishermen, hunters and sailors. But it is not easy to decipher the remains.
Just over a hundred meters north of the pier in Västerhamn, there is a half-razed stone wall, which surrounds a small cemetery, which can be difficult to spot. Already in the 18th century, the place is referred to as the Sailor's Graves. There have been many shipwrecks in the area. In the past, the coastal route for commercial shipping between Norrland and Mälardalen passed close by Kusö Kalv - a difficult section to pass.
